About the film

Walt Disney’s masterpiece Sleeping Beauty was released in theaters on January 29, 1959. This was the Walt Disney Studios 16th animated classic film. The film introduced Princess Aurora, Prince Phillip, Maleficent, the three fairies (Flora, Fauna and Merryweather) along with several other characters to the Disney family.

King Stefan and the Queen have a celebration to welcome their newborn baby, Princess Aurora. Maleficent who is the villain of the fairy tale is angry because she was not invited to the celebration so she places a curse on the baby Aurora. Maleficent’s curse is “before the sun sets on her 16th birthday, she will prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die.” However, Merryweather had not given the newborn Princess a gift yet. And while she was not powerful enjoy to reverse the curse, she could add a clause to the curse which was the princess would “fall into a deep sleep instead of dying, and will awaken with true love’s kiss.”

In fear that Maleficent’s curse would come true, the King and Queen orders all spinning wheels to be burned and sends Princess Aurora off to a secluded cottage in the woods to live with the three fairies until her 16th birthday. While secluded, the Princess went by the name Briar Rose. On Aurora’s 16th Birthday and while picking berries in the forest, Briar Rose meets Prince Phillip but the two do not know each others true identity. The two dance together in the forest and fall in love.

Unfortunately, the three fairies take Princess Aurora back to the castle shortly before sunset on her 16th birthday where Maleficent finds her and lures her to the castle tower where Aurora pricks her finger on the spindle of a magical spinning wheel that Maleficent has created and Aurora falls into a deep sleep. The fairies then cast a spell on the people in the castle causing them to sleep until the princess awakens.

Having heard about Aurora (Briar Rose) and Phillip’s love, the three fairies rush to find Prince Phillip only to find that he had been captured by Maleficent. So the fairies go to Maleficent’s castle to rescue Prince Phillip and arm him with a magical Sword of Truth and the Shield of Virtue. But, long story short (I don’t want to give away the entire story to anyone who has not seen the movie), Prince Phillip defeats the evil Maleficent and awakens the sleeping Princess with a kiss. And they both live happily ever after.
