During D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event this weekend, Pixar Animation Studios shared a first look at Disney-Pixar Coco 2 with new concept art. While the sequel to the 2017 Academy Award winning feature film Coco is still in the early stages, Coco 2 will reunite the team from the original film including director Lee Unkrich (CocoToy Story 3) and co-director Adrian Molina (Coco). Oscar winning producer Mark Nielsen (Toy Story 4Inside Out 2) will produce the new film scheduled to arrive in theaters in 2029.

The concept art reveals an older Miguel carrying his great-great-grandfather’s guitar while walking with Dante. The focus for Coco 2 has not been revealed yet, but Pixar promises that we are returning to the Land of the Dead in the sequel. Also Benjamín Bratt announced on stage at the Honda Center that he will reprise his role as the voice of Ernesto de la Crus in the upcoming film. More detail of the beloved film will be revealed as the production of the film progresses.

The release of Coco 2 in theaters will most like coincide with the opening of the first-ever Coco themed attraction at Disney California Adventure Park (and at a Disney Park) in 2029.

Coco Attraction Coming to Disney California Adventure

Work began earlier this year on the construction of the an all-new Coco attraction coming to Disney California Adventure Park. During Horizons: A Carousel of Progress at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event at the Honda Center, Ali Rubinstein (Senior Vice President, Global Cretive & Development Studios) and Emily O’Brien (Portflio Executive Creative Producer, Disneyland Resort and Tokyo Disney Resort) took to the stage to reveal new details about the first Coco ride ever at a Disney park, which was first announced at D23 in 2024.

This new attraction will celebrate all the things we love about Coco, highlighting the characters, music, Mexican culture, and the love of a family that’s passed down through the generations. Fans of the film will be able to spot favorite friends like Miguel, Dante, Héctor, and more as we remember Miguel’s unforgettable trip to the Land of the Dead.

The attraction storyline will pick up a year after the events of the original film. The queue, which will begin in Pixar Pier next to Inside Out Emotional Whirlwind, will welcome guests to a “casa museo” dedicated to the music of Miguel’s great-great grandfather, Héctor Rivera, with a statue of Héctor in the courtyard.

The attraction will begin with guests joining Miguel and traveling by boat through his memories of the Land of the Dead while hearing the music from the film. The skeletons in the Land of the Dead along the shores of the boatride will feature the latest Audio-Animatronics technology that “you’ll have to see to believe.”

There will be no height requirement for the Coco attraction so guests of all ages will be able to enjoy this highly-anticipated attraction when it opens.

Construction on the new attraction began earlier this year in the backstage area behind Pixar Pier and Paradise Gardens. An opening date for the attraction has not been announced but it will most likely coincide with the theatrical release of Coco 2 in 2029.
