Artemis Fowl is heading to Disney Channel and Disney+, bringing Eoin Colfer’s teenage mastermind to a new screen format. Disney has announced an all-new Artemis Fowl animated series has been greenlit naming Colfer as an executive producer alongside Ben Juwono (Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and Big Hero 6: The Series) and Colleen Evanson (DuckTales and Monsters at Work).
The news comes 25 years after the first book introduced a boy who plans crimes against a hidden, high-tech fairy society. Disney previously adapted the story as a live-action film in 2020 where Artemis tries to save his kidnapped father and obtain a powerful fairy object. The new series announcement gives a different setup, focused on his mother and a plan to steal fairy magic.
The books give the series a long history
The first Artemis Fowl novel came out in 2001. The original Artemis story runs across eight books, while later Fowl family stories and companion works broaden the franchise. Disney reports that the series of books have sold more than 35 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 48 languages.
In the books, the fairies live in an underground society known as the Lower Elements. Their world has advanced technology, strict laws, and its own systems of order. That contrast between old magic and modern tools helps set Artemis Fowl apart from more traditional fairy tales.
Captain Holly Short is a key figure in the books and a member of the Lower Elements Police, often called the LEP. Her role brings the fairy law-enforcement side of the story into conflict with Artemis’s plans. The books use that clash to build tension beyond the human boy’s schemes.
About the Animated Series
Disney describes the animated story as following 13-year-old Artemis Fowl, a genius who discovers an underground world of armed, high-tech fairies. He plans to capture one and steal its magic to heal his dying mother and save his family. Animation could show that hidden society in ways that would be hard to stage in live action. It could give fairy craft, magical effects, and underground settings a vivid style. Disney hasn’t announced an animation approach so those are only possibilities, not confirmed design choices.
A premiere date for the Artemis Fowl animated series has not been announced at this time, only that the series will air on Disney Channel and Disney+. Stay tuned for more details on this exciting project as they become available.
