Marvel Studios’ film The Marvels is coming to Disney+ on February 7, 2024 which is an entire week before the film is released on Blu-Ray and DVD. Usually, films are released on Digital, Blu-Ray and DVD a few months before premiering on the Disney+ streaming platform. However, that is not the case with The Marvels which may have something to do with its poor performance at the box office.
The Marvels stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel), Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel) and Teyonah Parris as Captain Monica Rambeauis.
The Marvels Box Office Reception
The Marvels was released in theaters on November 10, 2023 but did not have a blockbuster opening weekend like many of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films released in the past decade. The film only opened with $47 million in box office receipts which did put the film in the #1 spot for it’s opening weekend in the United States, but these opening results were far less than any other MCU movie in history.
On it’s second weekend, The Marvels had a historic drop of 79% in box office sales with only $10.2 million in sales which set another record of the biggest second weekend drop in history for a MCU movie.
Overall, The Marvels grossed $84.5 million in box office sales in the United States and Canada, and $121.5 million overseas for a worldwide box office total of $206 million. To date, it is the lowest-grossing film in the MCU. The film had a budget of $274.8 million so it fell way short of even coming close to breaking even for the studios.
I saw the film in theaters and I really liked it. I’m not sure why the public reception at the box office was so bad. Is the public tired of super-hero movies? Was there too many other film options during the Thanksgiving weekend and there after? Did it have to do with the public being too busy during the holiday season or the economy? Honestly, who knows! But, hopefully adding the film to Disney+ so soon after it’s theatrical release and even before releasing it on Blu-Ray and DVD will help generate new subscribers to the platform as well as generating ad revenue from the ad-supported subscribers. I will definitely be watching the film several times on Disney+ in February!
