Last month during Star Wars Celebration Japan, the next animated series from Lucasfilm was announced and it’s a good one. Or maybe I should say it is a dark one. One of the most popular and short lived (or so we thought) Star Wars Villains is coming to Disney+ in 2026 in an all-new animated series that will follow the former apprentice to the Emperor after the events of The Clone Wars. Darth Maul, Shadow Lord will showcase the villain as he plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire.

About Darth Maul

Some Star Wars casual fans may only remember Darth Maul from the 1999 prequel film Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. And while everyone who watched that film, saw the Shadow Lord cut in half and fall to his death after a lightsaber battle with Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Maul actually survived as was revealed in Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series. Maul lived in the outer rim after he was presumed dead and used the Force to construct spider-like legs to replace his own severed legs. After Maul’s brother Savage Opress finds Maul in the outer rim and brings him back to his home planet Dathomir, Maul is outfitted with a pair of cybernetic legs. From that point, a series of events take place which I will leave as a mystery in case you haven’t watched the complete series. Maul also appears in Star Wars Rebels which takes place several years after the events of The Clone Wars.

Sam Witwer will return as the voice of Darth Maul in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord. Witwer previously voiced the character in both Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels.

Beyond Maul’s plot to rebuild his criminal syndicate, we don’t know anything else about the new animated series. However, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is currently in production and is set to debut on Disney+ in 2026 so more information should be coming soon over the next year. So, stay tuned for more on the series and the Shadow Lord.
