The Disney Jr. Series
The original series, Sofia the First premiered on Disney Channel and Disney Jr. in 2012 and quickly became one of the most popular and well received series on both channels. The series followed Princess Sofia who was a village girl but had to learn how to be a princess after her widowed mother, Miranda, married the King of Enchancia.
When Sofia came to the castle, King Roland, Sofia’s new step-father, gave her an amulet to welcome her to the family and to the castle. Unknown to Roland, the amulet was enchanted and was the Amulet of Avalor which gave Sofia special gifts when she did good deeds but also cursed her when she did something wrong. One of the gifts that the amulet gave Sofia was the ability to communicate with animals. Because of this special gift, Sofia became best friends with a rabbit named Clover who went on many of her adventures.
Another enchanted gift that the amulet gave to Sofia was giving her a Disney Princess when she was in need. Her amulet would glow and a Disney Princess would appear to give Sofia advise on her current problem.
In 2016, Sofia the First had it’s first spin-off series called Elena of Avalor. Elena was trapped in Sofia’s amulet by an evil sorceress who has taken over her kingdom of Avalor. Sofia helps to free the princess and gain back control of Elena’s kingdom.
As Sofia grew up during the series, she became a story keeper helping stories get their happy ending. And in season 4, Sofia trains to be a Protector of the Ever Realm. The series concludes with Sofia defeating a evil sorceress and officially becoming a Protector of the Ever Realm. The series finale was in 2018 but continued to play as reruns on Disney Jr. as well as has been available to stream. Sofia the First was first available to stream on Netflix until it’s contract expired with the streaming service in 2022. Then, the series moved to Disney+ where all 4 seasons are currently available to stream.
