Earlier this month at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, it was announced that Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure Park would be doubling in size with two new attractions added to the land. And as I previously wrote, the location of the expansion will be behind the Avengers Headquaters building. Currently, that is exactly where the Red Car Trolley barn is located. With that being said, Disney has also announced that the Red Car Trolley will be closing in early 2025 because the Trolley barn will have to be demolished for the expansion of Avengers Campus.
A lot of websites have reported that the Red Car Trolley is closing permanently but that has not been confirmed by Disney. It is possible that a new Red Car Trolley barn will be constructed either behind the Hyperion Theater or in another location. There has been no mention of removing the tracks on Buena Vista Street or Sunset Boulevard so Disney would only need to reroute the Trolley with new tracks near the Hyperion Theatre and Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout. Also, Disney invested in charging stations for the Trolley only a few years ago when Avengers Campus opened so in my opinion, it would make sense to keep the Trolley around even though it has to temporary close for the current construction.
And even though I anticipate the Red Car Trolley returning at some point in the future, Disney’s main goal with this expansion is to increase capacity in the parks. And, the Red Car Trolley doesn’t really increase or decrease capacity so depending on what the operational costs are which includes Cast Member labor, Disney may or may not decide to return the Red Car Trolley to operation. Also, the Hyperion Theater is currently not being utilized along with many of the buildings in Hollywood Land, so if this area is planned for additional expansion, that could also seal the fate of the Red Car Trolley.
Red Car Trolley History
The Red Car Trolley opened on June 15, 2012 with the retheming of Disney California Adventure Park. The trolley transports guests from the theme parks main entrance on Buena Vista Street to Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood Land with a few stops along the way. The Hollywood Land stop is just across from the Hyperion Theatre queue. The attraction features trolley cars inspired by the Pacific Electric Railway’s “Red Cars” that once traveled through much of Southern California.
The trolleys even hosted an entertainment show from 2012 to 2019 called the “Red Car Trolley New Boys”. The show was extremely popular with guests but closed in 2019 due to the construction of Avengers Campus affecting the operation of the trolley cars.
