James P. “Sulley” Sullivan and Mike Wazowski are sticking around Disney California Adventure Park a little longer than originally planned. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! was originally scheduled to close this Spring to prepare for a new Avatar experience coming to the theme park. But there is good news for Monsters, Inc. cast because the attraction will be sticking around for another year.

This news doesn’t delay the construction of the new Avatar experience coming to Disney California Adventure Park which will begin construction soon. Because the California version of Pandora will mostly be constructed behind the building where Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! lives, the attraction can stay open longer for guests to enjoy without delaying construction that will be going on behind the show building.

The entire project involving the Avatar experience also involves several other projects going on around the resort including an all-new parking structure and transportation hub. The new parking structure and transportation hub will be developed in the existing Cast Member parking lot located behind Harbor Blvd. but also involves a new pedestrian bridge across Harbor Blvd. for easy access to the resort from the new parking structure.

The current bus transportation area located between Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park on the East end of the resort will become part of the Avatar attraction and Pandora area. The Toy Story parking lot bus drop-off and pick-up will be completely absorbed into the Avatar area allowing for construction to begin on the attraction without closing Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! inside the park.

Avatar Experience

The new Avatar experience coming to Disney California Adventure Park will send guests on an adventure of a lifetime in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora. Based on the concept art provided by Disney, the experience will include a boat ride attraction that is speculated to be similar to the Shanghai Disneyland Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, but with an Avatar theme.

Updates on Avatar Experience Coming to Disney California Adventure Park

The attraction experience has not been confirmed by Disney nor has an opening date for the area been announced. Based on the current status of the project and past Disney projects, it will most likely be 2-3 years before the Avatar experience opens.
