A brand-new Monstropolis themed land from Pixar Animation Studios’ Monsters, Inc. is coming to life at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World Resort and we have new information about the land and new themed coaster attraction.

In the new Monsters, Inc. Land, guests will be able to stroll down the streets of Monstropolis and meet some of their favorite characters from the Disney-Pixar film. The monsters that live in Monstropolis need laughter to power their city so they’ll be counting on guests visiting the new land to give them a lot of laughs. And what better way to get screams and laughs but from a new coaster style attraction. In the new attraction that is being designed for the land, guests will be able to ride through the Monsters, Inc. factory just like the doors did in the original film on the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park.

Movies come to life at Disney Parks
Disney Imagineers have been planning to turn the door vault moment from the film into an attraction ever since Monsters, Inc. was released in theaters in 2001. The potential “doors coaster” has been a rumor for several years. Originally the coaster was rumored to be added to Disney California Adventure Park in Anaheim, CA where Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! attraction is currently located in Hollywood Land. And while the location and park of the attraction has changed, Walt Disney Imagineers are finally bringing the rumor and dream to reality.
Update from SXSW Disney Panel
Taking to the stage during The Future of World-Building at Disney panel discussion at South by Southwest (SXSW), Pixar Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter and Imagineer Michael Hundgen discussed the new Monstropolis coaster with the crowd.

While many details about the attraction are still locked up in a laugh canister, the Walt Disney Imagineering team did reveal the load area for the attraction during the SXSW presentation. Not only will the new door coaster attraction feature the first-ever suspended coaster at a Disney Park, it will also feature the first-ever vertical lift at a Disney Park.
Disney Park Guests will board the vehicle before being hoisted into the air (just like in the movie!) to zoom into the door vault. It’s going to be a unique experience that will be fun and different than any other experience currently at a Disney Park.
A concept model of the new Monsters, Inc. suspended coaster was shared with attendees at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2024.

In addition to the new Monsters, Inc. themed coaster, guests will be able to meet James P. Sullivan, Mike Wazowski along with other characters from the Monsters, Inc. universe in the new land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

The Muppets
Work on the Monsters, Inc. Land is will begin this summer at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the area where The Muppets are currently located. However, don’t worry! The Muppets aren’t leaving Disney’s Hollywood Studios. They are only moving to a new home at the theme park.
