About Lillian Marie Bounds Disney

Lillian Marie Bounds was born in Spalding, Idaho on February 15, 1899. She moved to Southern California in 1923 and worked as a secretary for Walt’s company where the two first met. The two later married in 1925 and had two daughters, Diane (1933) and Sharon (1936). Walt and Lillian were married until Walt’s death on December 15, 1966.

Lillian is most credited with naming Mickey Mouse on a 1928 train ride from New York to California. Walt drew the famous mouse on the train ride and told Lillian he was going to name the character Mortimer Mouse. Lillian did not like the name and suggested Mickey Mouse instead. Mortimer Mouse later became one of Mickey’s rivals in short cartoon as a homage to the name that was almost used.
