KA-CHOW! Happy Lightning McQueen Day! Established in 2017, Lightning McQueen Day is celebrated annually on September 5th (09/05) as a nod to the iconic red race car’s racing number, #95, from Disney-Pixar Cars.

Lightning McQueen Day

Lightning McQueen’s debut in Cars

Disney and Pixar introduced Lightning McQueen in Cars, which opened in theaters in 2006. In the first film, McQueen is a talented rookie race car focused on winning the Piston Cup. But after getting stranded in the small town of Radiator Springs, he meets and develops new friendships with Mater, Sally, Doc Hudson and other residents of the town who teach him to value friendship more than racing trophies.

With the popularity of the first Cars film, two sequels have followed: Cars 2 in 2011 and Cars 3 in 2017.

In Cars 2, Lightning McQueen competes in the World Grand Prix overseas with Mater as his traveling companion. However, during their trip, Mater gets pulled into an international spy adventure with secret agents Finn McMissile and Holley Shiftwell.

In Cars 3, McQueen fights to stay competitive against a younger generation of high-tech racers. With help from young trainer Cruz Ramirez, he prepares for a major comeback.

This years (2026) observance of Lightning McQueen Day coincides with the 20th anniversary of the first Cars film. A fourth Cars film has not been announced by Pixar; however, with the continued popularity of the franchise as well as the ongoing addition of Disney-Pixar Cars characters into Disney Parks like Piston Peak currently under construction at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, a fourth Cars film is definitely a possibility.
