Today is the 96th Birthday of Mickey & Minnie Mouse! To celebrate this dynamic duo, I wanted to share some of their different looks throughout 2024. From the end of the 2023 holiday season to their most recent 2024 holiday costumes, Mickey & Minnie Mouse always look their best no matter what the occasion.
In January, Mickey & Minnie wore their Lunar New Year costumes for the celebration at Disney California Adventure Park. Then in February, Mickey & Minnie displayed their love for each other during Sweethearts’ Nite. And, in March during Disney Channel Nite, Mickey & Minnie showed their team spirit for High School Musical.
At the close of Disney Channel Nite in March, Mickey & Minnie said “Goodnight” to guests with Mickey in his Mousercise workout suit and Minnie in her Totally Minnie dress. In May, Mickey & Minnie visited a galaxy far, far away for Star Wars Nite dressed in R2-D2 and BB-8 costumes. And in June, Mickey & Minnie showed off their pride and love for everyone during Pride Nite at Disneyland.
Mickey Mouse has his regular tuxedo suit with red pants that he greets guests wearing on a regular basis at Disney Parks around the world. But he also dresses up for Halloween every year and dresses a little more casual for Disney Jr events.
And, Minnie Mouse puts on her scariest costume of the year during Halloween at Oogie Boogie Bash when she dresses up as Winifred Sanderson, one of the three Sanderson Sisters from Disney’s Hocus Pocus.
These are only a few of the many costumes that both Mickey Mouse & Minnie have worn throughout the year. With Disney Parks around the world, these two Disney characters have an unlimited wardrobe for every occasion.
Mickey & Minnie Mouse Through the Years
On November 18, 1928, Mickey & Minnie Mouse made their first big screen appearance in Walt Disney’s animated short film Steamboat Willie. The short film starred Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and Peg Leg Pete and was one of the first animated films to have synchronized sound. Walt Disney, himself, voiced Mickey & Minnie Mouse in the film.
There were actually two Mickey Mouse shorts produced by Walt Disney and his team before Steamboat Willie but Walt could not find a distributor for either of the films. So, while Plane Crazy and The Gallopin’ Gaucho were actually Mickey & Minnie Mouse’s first films to be produced, their actual screen debut was in Steamboat Willie marking the birthday for both Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.
As the story is told, Walt thought up Mickey Mouse on a train ride home to Los Angeles from New York City after learning that he had lost the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Walt originally wanted to name the new character Mortimer Mouse but his wife Lillian didn’t like that name and suggested Mickey instead.
Walt Disney, himself, was the voice for both Mickey and Minnie Mouse in the beginning. Walt remained the voice of Mickey through 1946 until Jimmy MacDonald took over the role. Walt did reprise his role as Mickey’s voice from 1955 to 1959 for The Mickey Mouse Club television series on ABC.
In 1977, Wayne Allwine took over as the voice for Mickey Mouse until his death in 2009. Wayne married Russi Taylor in 1991 who was the voice of Minnie Mouse from 1986 until her death in 2019.
After Wayne Allwine’s death in 2009, Bret Iwan took over as the voice of Mickey Mouse and remains Mickey’s primary voice today. Kaitlyn Robrock took over Minnie Mouse’s voice in 2019 after Russi Taylor’s death and remains the voice of Minnie today.
Both Mickey Mouse and Minnie have played many different characters in their 96 years. From the Brave Little Tailor to Mickey’s Christmas Carol to The Prince and the Pauper, Mickey and Minnie have displayed their diverse acting skills on the big screen. And on Disney Jr. and Disney Channel, the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Mickey and the Roadster Racers, Mickey Mouse Funhouse and Minnie’s Bow-Toons continue to show off these two sweethearts popularity to audiences around the world.
And, if these two weren’t busy enough with their television and movie roles, Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse both greet guests on a daily basis at Disney Parks around the world. From parades to shows to meet and greets, these two love birds are always busy at Disney Parks. But, the love that they share with others and the smiles that they put on faces of all ages is the magic that’s Disney that gives us all an escape from everyday life and hope for the future.
