What is a Dining Plan?
The Walt Disney World dining plan has two options available.
Quick Service Dining Plan
First, there is a Quick Service Dining Plan. As the name of the plan states, with this plan you can dine at a variety of Quick-Service locations with no dining reservations required.
The plan includes the following for each member in your party ages 3 and over:
- 2 Quick-Service Meals (per night of stay)
- Guests ages 3 to 9 must order from a children’s menu, where available.
- Beverages are included with each meal. Guests under 21 years of age may choose from a variety of nonalcoholic beverages. Guests 21 and older with valid identification may substitute for beer, wine and cocktails.
- 1 Snack/Nonalcoholic Drink (per night of stay)
- 1 Resort-Refillable Drink Mug
The specific number of meals and snacks are determined by the number of nights included in the package stay. Meals and snacks can be redeemed at any time during your stay but are nontransferable between party members. Unused meals and snacks will roll over day to day and expire at midnight on the day of your checkout.
Disney Dining Plan
And the other plan is the Disney Dining Plan. This dining plan includes a table-service meal for each night of your stay which includes Character Dining plus a quick-service meal. Below are the details of the Disney Dining Plan for each member in your party ages 3 and over:
- 1 Quick-Service Meal (per night of stay)
- Guests ages 3 to 9 must order from a children’s menu, where available.
- Beverages are included with each meal. Guests under 21 years of age may choose from a variety of nonalcoholic beverages. Guests 21 and older with valid identification may substitute for beer, wine and cocktails.
- 1 Table-Service Meal (per night of stay)
- Reservations at Table-Service restaurants are subject to availability and are highly recommended.
- Two table-service meals will be redeemed from the dining plan for each person dining at a Fine/Signature Dining experience, select Character Dining experience or a Dinner Show.
As with the Quick Service Dining Plan, the specific number of meals and snacks are determined by the number of nights included in the vacation package stay. Meals and snacks can be redeemed at any time during your stay but are nontransferable between party members. Unused meals and snacks will roll over day to day and expire at midnight on the day of your checkout.
Is a Dining Plan a good deal?
The answer to that question depends on a lot of factors including your budget, your party size, length of stay and how you prefer to dine while on vacation. While both plans can be a good deal, especially if they are free with your vacation package, they might not be the best option for every party. For example, if you like to dine at a table-service restaurant only one or two times during your vacation stay and prefer to eat at quick-service locations the rest of your stay, then the dining plan may not be a good deal for you and your party.
In order to weight out the costs, I suggest tentatively planning out your meals during your stay and pick out which dining locations you would like to visit. Then, add up the cost of those meals and compare that to the cost of the dining plans. Disney Character dining and table-service dining can be very expensive so you’ll need to consider those costs when deciding on which dining plan is best for you or if either plan works for you and your party.
With the free dining offer, a room discount will not apply so that will be another item to consider. In some cases, a room discount might be better for you and your party over the free dining plan — it might even be a better value. Spend a little time planning in advance — it may save you and your party a lot of time and money when visiting the Walt Disney World Resort.
