Disney’s new live-action remake of the 2002 animated film Lilo & Stitch surfed into theaters on Friday earning $55 million at the domestic box office, smashing the competition. The film is projected to have the best ever opening for a Memorial Day weekend. And, with such a great opening day at the box office, the opening weekend is projected to be between $175 million to $180 million.
Disney did not hold back on marketing the film and that investment appears to have paid off. Stitch has been making appearances all around the world, online and making appearances on television. Stitch even visited the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World and toilet papered Cinderella Castle!
Disney’s Lilo & Stitch is also riding a wave into theaters at the international box office. The film has taken in over $56 million at international box offices in it’s first 3 days. With disappointing box office revenue from Disney’s Snow White earlier this year, Lilo & Stitch is making up for it with a stellar opening weekend.
Walt Disney Studios’ Lilo & Stitch stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Agudong as Nani and Kaipo Dudoit as David. Chris Sanders reprised his role as the original voice of Stitch from the 2002 Disney animated classic film. The film also stars Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, Zach Galifianakis as Jumba and Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles.
Disney’s Lilo & Stitch is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and produced by Jonathan Eirich, p.g.a. and Dan Lin, with Louie Provost, Tom Peitzman and Ryan Halprin serving as executive producers.
Audience ratings on Rotten Tomatoes are currently at a very positive 93% overall. Reviews from audiences state that this is the best live-action remake of a Disney animated movie ever. Other audience reviews state that the film is emotional, funny and a great family movie.
