Today during The Walt Disney Company’s Annual Meeting of Shareholders, CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney and Pixar’s Coco 2 is in the works at Pixar Animation Studios. The film is only in the initial stages of development but a sequel to the 2017 Academy Award winning feature film Coco is officially confirmed.

During the announcement, Iger stated that the new film “will be full of humor, heart and adventure.” Unfortunately, we still have a while before the film will arrive in theaters. The film is scheduled to be released in 2029 which will most likely coincide with the opening of the first-ever Coco themed attraction at Disney California Adventure Park (and at a Disney Park).

Coco Attraction Coming to Disney California Adventure

During D23 The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in August 2024, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro announced an all-new attraction themed to Pixar Animation Studios’ Coco will be coming to Disney California Adventure Park. Josh then quickly stated that work would begin in 2026. And since construction for new attractions at Disney Parks typically takes 2-3 years, the new Coco themed attraction will most likely open in 2029.

Coco Attraction Coming to Disney California Adventure

Walt Disney Imagineering will draw inspiration for the attraction from beloved classic attractions like Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. “We’re bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way through the latest Audio-Animatronics technology,” Josh told the audience during the announcement. “These figures will appear in ways you’ll have to see to believe.”

According to the concept art, the Coco themed attraction will a boat-ride attraction similar to Pirates of the Caribbean filled with music as the boat takes guests on a trip to the land of the dead. An official opening date for the new attraction at Disney California Adventure Park has not been announced yet; however, based on todays announcement of Coco 2 releasing in theaters in 2029, we expect the two openings will coincide around the same date.
