The Marvels had a historic drop of 79% in box office sales this weekend which sets another record of the biggest second weekend drop in the history for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. Previously, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania held the record for the largest decline in box office sales of 69% for a MCU movie in the second weekend after the movie release.

This weekend, The Marvels tied for third place at the box office with only $10.2 million in sales from 4,030 theaters. Overseas, the superhero movie took in another $19.5 million from 52 markets bringing it’s total sales since the films premiere on November 10th to $161.3 million The film had a net budget of $219.8 million so at this rate, the film is going to take a few more weeks to break even.

About The Marvels

The Marvels stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel and Teyonah Parris as Captain Monica Rambeauis. Samuel L. Jackson also stars as Nick Fury.

Without giving away any spoilers, Danvers, Rambeau and Kamala switch places and powers and fight the Kree. That is all I am going to say about the plot of the movie in case any readers haven’t seen the movie in theaters yet.

Thanksgiving weekend is usually a big weekend for the box office. However, Disney’s Wish, the companies much anticipated 62nd animated classic film, releases on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 so The Marvels will have another Walt Disney Company competitor at the box office which doesn’t look good for the movies Thanksgiving weekend sales, especially based on the past two weeks.

Here’s the Final Trailer from The Marvels which is now in theaters.
