Today, Disney finally announced the opening date for the rethemed Adventureland Treehouse Inspired by Walt Disney’s Swiss Family Robinson at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. The newly redesigned attraction will open on November 10, 2023, just over 2 years after it closed as Tarzan’s Treehouse in 2021.
Treehouse History
Walt Disney and his Imagineers first opened the treehouse on November 18, 1962 and it was named the Swiss Family Treehouse, themed and based on the December 1960 film “Swiss Family Robinson”.
In March 1999, the Swiss Family Treehouse closed and was rethemed to Tarzan’s Treehouse which reopened in June that same year. Now, that was a fast retheme especially compared to today’s snail speed construction at Disney Parks. The treehouse remained themed as Tarzan’s Treehouse, based on the 1999 film, until 2021.
In September 2021, Tarzan’s Treehouse closed unexpectedly and many fans thought that the attraction was only going to have a normal refurbishment with some wood planks on the swinging rope bridge replaced and a fresh coat of paint added throughout the treehouse. Then, after the movie “Encanto” came out and was so popular, rumors started spreading that the treehouse was going to be themed to “Encanto”. Another rumor spreading at the time was that the treehouse was going to be themed as the Society of Explorers and Adventurers from Disneyland Tokyo.
In May 2022, the treehouse entrance and rope bridge were removed to help with guest flow and to widen the walkway in the area. But, even then, no one knew exactly what was going on with the treehouse. However, in November 2022, Disney finally announced that the treehouse was being rethemed and would be named the Adventureland Treehouse inspired by Walt Disney’s Swiss Family Robinson. No opening date was given at that time.
New Adventureland Treehouse
Today, we finally know that the new Adventureland Treehouse will open in just over two weeks. The rethemed treehouse will pay tribute to the original treehouse that Walt built with a fresh new story for the next generation of Disneyland visitors to experience and enjoy. The rooms in the treehouse will include the mother’s music den, the sons’ nature room and the daughter’s astronomer’s loft which will all be located in the treehouse boughs. Then, on the ground level of the treehouse, guest will be able to tour the kitchen, dining room and the father’s art studio.
The home’s iconic waterwheel, which is powered by a small nearby brook, will return along with the pully system that the Swiss Family Robinson used to deliver water to the upper levels of the treehouse in the film.
