Disney’s A Goofy Movie is a 90s classic that has stood the test of time over the last 30 years. The film was released in U.S. theaters on April 7, 1995 with mixed reviews and modest box office returns. But, after being released on home video in September 1995, the film started to gain success and soon gained a cult following. And now, 30 years later, A Goofy Movie still has a large cult following, especially with Disney fans and is considered an underrated classic film.
The film’s enduring appeal stems from its blend of humor, catchy songs like “I 2 I” & “Stand Out” and relatable characters. Its portrayal of father & son dynamics and teenage experiences continues to resonate with audiences across generations, making it a cherished classic and the perfect father & son film.
A Goofy Movie’s Origin, Sequel & More
Disney’s A Goofy Movie is spin-off movie from The Disney Afternoon television series Goof Troop from the early 90s. The film takes place about three years after Goof Troop and follows Goofy and his now teenage son Max as they embark on a cross-country father & son fishing trip. The film features a cameo appearance by Mickey Mouse & Donald Duck as Goofy & Max hit the open road. You will also see references to other Disney characters and films throughout the movie.
While the film was not a blockbuster hit at the box office, it did gain success and popularity after being released on home video. So, Disney began work on a sequel to the film. On February 29, 2000, a direct-to-video sequel titled An Extremely Goofy Movie was released. The sequel follows Max as he goes to college with his friend P.J. But, after Goofy is fired from his job and is told that he needs a college degree to get a new job, Goofy enrolls in the same college as Max, much to Max’s dismay.
Other appearances of Goofy & Max as father and son include Disney’s House of Mouse and Mickey Mouse Works animated television series. The two also star in the direct to video Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas in A Very Goofy Christmas story.
Recently, during Disneyland After Dark: 90s Nite, Goofy & Max hosted a dance party during the after hours event dressed in their Goof Troop and A Goofy Movie outfits.

About the Movie
A Goofy Movie follows Goofy and his teenage son Max on a hilarious cross-country road trip. The story explores their relationship as Max tries to assert his independence and impress his crush, Roxanne.
Max wants to take Roxanne to a Powerline concert watch party during summer vacation. But, after getting into trouble at school while pretending to be Powerline to impress Roxanne, Goofy decides to take Max on a father & son bonding road trip to go fishing. Goofy means well but an embarrassed Max wants to be cool and impress Roxanne so he tells her that Goofy is taking him to L.A. to see Powerline in concert.
Powerline is a rock superstar who has killer dance moves and sings catchy tunes. “Stand Out” and “Eye to Eye” are total hits in Max & Roxanne’s eyes and to many of the kids at Max’s school.
Goofy & Max’s road trip quickly becomes a wild adventure when they visit places like Lester’s Possum Park along the way. They even have an encounter with Bigfoot while Goofy is teaching Max how to fish. But, Max is embarrassed by his dad and angry about the trip so he decides to change Goofy’s map to get the two to L.A. instead of to Lake Destiny in Idaho.
The adventure continues as the two struggle to understand each other but concludes with a bonding experience during the Powerline concert.
